Sapa promotes H’Mong flute heritage through community tourism

The H'Mong flute teaching class in 2026 in Ta Phin commune, Lao Cai province, contributes to passing on cultural heritage to the younger generation, fostering national pride, and opening up opportunities to promote local cultural values associated with community tourism development.

Ta Phin commune was established by merging Trung Chai commune and Ta Phin commune, formerly part of Sa Pa town. The expanded development space and advantageous connection with the Sa Pa National Tourist Area create favorable conditions for the locality to exploit its tourism and service potential and develop commercial agriculture.

Ta Phin is currently home to five ethnic groups, with the H'Mong accounting for approximately 85% of the population. Through generations, the people here have preserved unique cultural values, most notably the traditional craft of weaving and sewing brocade, and the art of H'Mong flute performance, contributing to the local identity. These are also national intangible cultural heritages that need to be preserved and promoted.

For the H'Mong people in Ta Phin, the sound of the H'Mong flute is not just the sound of a traditional musical instrument, but also associated with important milestones in each person's life. According to traditional beliefs, a young man who knows how to play his first H'Mong flute melodies is considered to have reached adulthood and is loved by the community. Through each melody, the sound of the H'Mong flute conveys thoughts and feelings, preserving customs and cultural values passed down through generations.

These values contribute to the unique identity of Ta Phin, while also highlighting the need to preserve and promote this heritage in contemporary life. Bringing the Mong flute art closer to the younger generation through local teaching activities is one of the practical ways to continue the flow of ethnic culture.

Based on that, on the afternoon of October 13th, the People's Committee of Ta Phin commune organized the opening ceremony of the 2026 Mong flute training course at Ta Phin Primary School, Sa Xeng village, with the participation of 45 students from the area.

In the class, students are directly guided by artisan Giang A Sai on how to use the H'Mong mouth organ (khen), control their breath, create sounds, become familiar with rhythms and tempos, and practice traditional H'Mong mouth organ pieces. Besides mouth organ playing techniques, students are also instructed on footwork and coordinated movements in mouth organ dances, gradually combining music with body movements to practice and perform characteristic H'Mong mouth organ pieces.

Organizing music lessons for students while they are still in school not only helps them become familiar with the techniques of using musical instruments but also provides an opportunity to learn more about the significance of the khene (a type of bamboo flute) in community life. Through learning and practice, they gain a deeper understanding and love for their national culture, gradually forming an awareness and responsibility in preserving and promoting this heritage.

In the context of developing community-based tourism in Ta Phin, the H'Mong flute and traditional dances can become a rich and distinctive experiential product, contributing to the attractiveness of the destination. When connected with local cultural activities and life, the H'Mong flute art not only helps tourists better understand the customs and traditions of the people but also enriches the local tourism products.

To ensure the continued spread of H'Mong reed pipe art, teaching and transmission activities need to be maintained, linked with regular practice and performances within the community. Through this, the reed pipe will have more space to be present in grassroots cultural life, becoming a bridge between generations, and simultaneously fostering pride in ethnic identity among the younger generation.

From today's traditional classes, the sound of the H'Mong flute in Ta Phin continues to be passed down through generations, resonating in the highland villages and contributing to preserving the essence of ethnic culture amidst modern life.
